Our method

How we rank Toronto businesses

Every list follows the same steps, so you can see why a business is ranked where it is and judge the list for yourself.

Our process

Each ranking starts with a long list of businesses in one category and one area. We narrow it down in four steps.

  1. Build the long list.We gather businesses from local search, map listings, directories, professional registers and reader suggestions.
  2. Research each one.We read reviews across several platforms, study the website and services, compare pricing where it is public, and check qualifications and registrations that apply to the trade.
  3. Verify the facts. We confirm the name, address, phone number and hours. Each listing shows the date its details were last checked.
  4. Rank and explain. We rank businesses against the criteria below and write a short reason for every position, along with who each business is best for.

What we look at

  • Reputation. The overall pattern of reviews across more than one platform, including how the business responds to problems. We look at the pattern, not a single score.
  • Quality and expertise. Qualifications, registrations, specialties and evidence of results, such as portfolios, photos or case examples.
  • Value and clarity. Whether prices and policies are easy to find, and whether what you get is fair for what you pay.
  • Experience. Booking, communication, cleanliness and how customers describe their visit.
  • Access. Location, hours, transit and accessibility.

The right criteria vary by category. A dental clinic is judged on regulation and infection control, a restaurant on food and consistency, a contractor on licensing, insurance and clear quotes. Each category page explains what matters most in that field.

Paid relationships and independence

Our rankings are not for sale. If a business pays us for an advertisement, a featured profile or any other service, we label it clearly on the page and the payment has no effect on the rank. Every list says whether it is independent or contains paid relationships.

We do not accept payment to remove a business, change a review summary or hide a concern.

Keeping lists up to date

Businesses change. We re-check listed details and review patterns at least twice a year, and sooner when we hear about a change. Each page shows when it was last updated.

Corrections

If you spot a mistake, tell us. Email hello@torontotoppicks.com with the page and what needs to change. We review every report and update the page when it is confirmed.

Limits of our rankings

A ranking is a research-based opinion, not a guarantee. Experiences differ between customers and visits. Before you book, we encourage you to check current details with the business and to ask the questions listed on each guide. For health, dental and legal services, a ranking is not professional advice.
